Russia has recalled its ambassador from Armenia due to Yerevan’s growing ties with the EU
This is according to Bloomberg.
Moscow has linked the decision to Armenia’s move towards the EU
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the ambassador had been summoned to discuss the Armenian authorities’ actions aimed at deepening relations with the European Union. The Russian Foreign Ministry believes that such steps could affect cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union. Earlier, the Armenian authorities announced their intention to move towards EU membership. At the same time, Yerevan has repeatedly emphasised that this is a long-term process.
Russia warns of possible economic consequences
This week, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced a possible review of a number of economic agreements with Armenia if the country continues on its path towards European integration. This concerns, in particular, cooperation in the supply of gas, fuel and rough diamonds. Against the backdrop of deteriorating relations, Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the Eurasian Economic Union summit, which took place on 29 May. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not attend the meeting, explaining his absence by citing preparations for the parliamentary elections scheduled for 7 June.
