The Dnipro District Court in Kyiv has found Vitaliy Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Action Centre, guilty of assaulting the pro-Russian blogger Vsevolod Filimonenk. The defence will appeal the verdict.

This was reported by ZMINA.

Shabunin was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code — violence against a journalist. The court also ordered him to pay the costs of the expert examinations — approximately 4,000 hryvnias.

Yuriy Nikolov, editor of the ‘Our Money’ project, stated after the hearing that Shabunin had not received a prison sentence because the statute of limitations on the case had expired.

The incident took place in 2017. Shabunin explained that he had struck Filimonenk because the latter had insulted his colleague. Initially, the case was investigated under the article on bodily harm, but was later reclassified as violence against a journalist. The defence objected, arguing that Filimonenko did not have the status of a journalist and that the conflict itself was of a domestic nature.

In March 2024, the blogger appeared in a film by Russia’s Channel One entitled ‘Zelenskyy and His Combat Drug Addicts’. The film discredited the Ukrainian military. On 20 September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions against Filimonenko for his activities.

As a reminder, last summer, the head of the Anti-Corruption Action Centre, Vitaliy Shabunin, was placed under investigation. Law enforcement accused him of evading military service and fraud.
