SSU hits Russian submarine in Novorossiysk port
The Security Service of Ukraine reported a successful special operation in the port of Novorossiysk, where underwater drones hit a Russian 636.3 Varshavyanka class submarine. As a result of the explosion, the submarine sustained critical damage and actually lost its combat capability.
This is a submarine equipped with four Kalibr cruise missile launchers, which Russia regularly uses to strike at the territory of Ukraine. The operation was carried out by units of the SSU 13th Main Military Counterintelligence Directorate jointly with the Ukrainian Navy.
The attack was carried out using Sub Sea Baby underwater drones. This is the world's first confirmed case of a combat submarine being hit by underwater drones. Experts estimate that the cost of a Warsaw-class submarine is about $400 million, and taking into account the sanctions, the construction of a new similar boat could cost up to $500 million.
This type of submarine is known as a Black Hole because of its low noise level and difficulty in detection by sonar systems. The SSU notes that the damaged boat was forced to stay in Novorossiysk after a series of successful attacks by Ukrainian Sea Baby drones, which forced the Russian fleet to leave Sevastopol in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
