The tragedy that unfolded in the Holosiivskyi district on Saturday, 18 April, has taken an unexpected turn. Shocking footage of the first moments of the attack has emerged online. The video shows two patrol officers, having arrived at the scene, fleeing after the first shots were fired, leaving an injured child in the crossfire

The terrorist’s route: from Demiivska to ‘Velmart’

Dmitry Vasylchenkov, a 58-year-old native of Moscow, went on a veritable hunt for innocent civilians. Before heading out onto the street, he set fire to his own flat, after which he opened fire with an officially registered carbine.

The aftermath of the attack:

  • Demievskaya Street: four random passers-by were shot in cold blood.

  • “Velmart” supermarket: the attacker barricaded himself inside the shop, taking hostages, where he killed another person.

  • Total number of victims: the attack claimed the lives of six people (the latest victim – a young woman – died in hospital).

  • Injured: 14 people are under medical supervision. Among them is a boy born in 2015 with a gunshot wound. According to preliminary reports, his parents were killed by the gunman.

Reaction from the security forces and the SBU

The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police are currently investigating the case under the terrorism act. According to media reports, the police officers seen in the video serve in the Patrol Police. The head of the unit, Yevhen Zhukov, has not yet commented on the matter. 

As previously reported by ThePublic, the special operation in the Holosiivskyi district ended with the elimination of the attacker. Members of the KORD special unit stormed the supermarket after negotiations with Vasylchenko reached an impasse. During the attempt to apprehend him, the terrorist offered armed resistance and was killed by the special forces.
