A park in Chernihiv will be renamed in honor of Trump
This is written by ThePublic.info, citing correspondent Suspilne, who was present at the session.
The proposal to rename was made by Marina Semenенко, head of the "European Solidarity" faction. Later, it became known that the "Fairy Tale" park in the Sherstyan neighborhood of Chernihiv would be renamed.
As stated in the explanatory note to this decision, the park was renamed "to honor prominent political leaders of modern times, as well as to attract international attention to the reconstruction of the hero city of Chernihiv".
"Residents of Chernihiv sincerely hope that during these new international challenges, Donald Trump will be able to make efforts to end another major war and achieve lasting peace. We believe that for this, he can deservedly become a Nobel Peace Prize laureate," — the note says.
Marina Semenенко noted on her Facebook page that the next step would be to address the President of the United States and his family with an invitation to visit the hero city of Chernihiv.
The renaming of the "Fairy Tale" park in the Sherstyan neighborhood of Chernihiv in honor of the U.S. president is "an extremely gross violation of the law and state policy on the national memory of the Ukrainian people." This was stated in comments to Suspilne by Serhii Butko, a representative of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory.
"A person’s name can only be used for naming anything after their death. This is stated in the law «On assigning names (pseudonyms) to legal entities and property objects, jubilees and holidays, names and dates of historical events» part 2 of article 3."
Butko explains: a person’s worthiness to have a street or park named after them can only be fully assessed after they have completed their life journey.
"As far as I know, the initiator deputies of this renaming were informed by a lawyer that this is prohibited by law. But it happened as it happened. In my opinion — this is very bad. Because our community has many claims. There are many Heroes of Ukraine (posthumously), born in independent Ukraine, who gave their lives. They are awarded the highest honors, but there are no names in their honor."
Another violation Butko mentions is the "failure to hold a commission on toponymy and public discussions" regarding the renaming of this park: "The decision was immediately made in the session hall. The law is unambiguous, and its norms must be followed. I do not understand why 22 city council deputies violated the law?".
Marina Semenенко, in a comment to Suspilne, stated that she is aware of the law prohibiting renaming with the names of living people and added:
"Therefore, we did not rename it after Donald Trump. It is — Trump Park. Just the surname. It was an initiative of our faction. The Chernihiv City Council can establish names as it wishes in the city. This is not a matter for the Institute of National Memory".
Marina Semenенко called this decision a "purely diplomatic, political, good step to benefit our city".
