A fatal traffic accident involving the mayor of Voznesensk occurred in the Golovanivskyi district of the Kirovohrad region. The police have opened a criminal investigation and are investigating all the circumstances of the accident.

In the Kirovohrad region, law enforcement officers are investigating a fatal traffic accident involving the mayor of Voznesensk, Yevgeny Velichko. The accident occurred on 28 January 2026 at around 4 p.m. on the R 06 motorway between Mykolaiv and Blagovishchenske in the Golovanivskyi district of the Kirovohrad region. This was reported by the Voznesensk city authorities and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kirovohrad region.

According to preliminary information from the police, the driver of a 1988 Toyota Camry, travelling in the direction of the town of Golovanivsk, drove into the oncoming lane. As a result, there was a collision with a Renault Megane, driven by a 1986-born driver, who was travelling in his lane.

As a result of the accident, the driver of the Renault Megane died at the scene. A passenger in the same car, born in 1977, suffered bodily injuries and was taken to a medical facility. This information was reported to the correspondent by Oksana Kovtunenko, spokesperson for the Kirovohrad Regional Police.

The Voznesensk City Council noted that Yevgeny Velichko was on a business trip at the time of the accident. According to preliminary data, one of the causes of the accident could have been unfavourable weather conditions. At the same time, all the circumstances and causes of the incident are being established by the authorised bodies.

Investigators have opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The mayor of Voznesensk was detained and charged with violating traffic safety rules, resulting in the death of the victim or causing serious bodily harm. The pre-trial investigation is currently ongoing.
