Sweden has donated 16 Gripen C/D aircraft to Ukraine and will sell a further 20 fighter jets
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced that the government has approved the purchase of up to 20 Gripen E/F fighter jets for Ukraine under the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan mechanism.
He announced this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the airbase in Uppsala.
According to Kristersson, Sweden also intends to transfer 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine free of charge as part of bilateral aid.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine expects to receive the first Gripen fighter jets within the next 10 months.
Furthermore, according to the head of state, Ukraine is ready to purchase 22 new Gripen E fighter jets. It is expected that these could be delivered by 2030.
In addition, Zelenskyy announced that nearly $400 million from the new defence package will be allocated to the production of drones.
