Switzerland is preparing for the first talks between the US and Iran following the conclusion of the ceasefire
Initial talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to take place on Friday at the Bürgenstock mountain resort in Switzerland, following the signing of a ceasefire agreement by the two sides.
This was reported by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Reuters.
The ministry noted that a meeting between US and Iranian representatives, with mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, is currently planned. The main topic of the talks is expected to be the implementation of the agreement.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry clarified that a reference to the participation of “other countries involved” in the meeting had been removed from an earlier version of the statement.
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that, at this stage, no further information is available regarding the timetable or details of the talks.
Earlier, whilst in France, US President Donald Trump signed a hard copy of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.
On Sunday, Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that a peace agreement had been reached between the US and Iran, providing for an immediate and indefinite cessation of military operations. The parties had previously signed the memorandum electronically.
The ceremony to sign the document in person is due to take place on 19 June in Geneva, Switzerland.
