Zelenskyy is hoping to open a further five negotiation clusters with the EU in the coming weeks
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has confirmed that he will take part in a meeting of the Council of the European Union in Brussels on 18 June. The Head of State also expressed his hope that the remaining negotiation clusters would be opened soon as part of Ukraine’s EU accession process.
“We are very grateful to all the countries of the European Union for opening the first cluster. This is a significant step forward for us. We are not stopping there. Our aim is to open the other five clusters in the coming weeks, so that all six clusters are opened and pave the way for our future EU membership,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy whilst speaking to journalists in Brussels.
The President emphasised that Ukraine will continue to work on fulfilling the necessary conditions to advance the negotiation process.
Following the introduction in 2020 of an updated methodology for negotiations on accession to the European Union, the negotiation chapters were grouped into six thematic clusters. These include ‘Fundamentals’, ‘Internal Market’, ‘Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth’, ‘Green Agenda and Sustainable Development’, ‘Resources, Agriculture and Cohesion’, and ‘External Relations’.
On 15 June in Luxembourg, Ukraine officially opened the first negotiation cluster, ‘Fundamentals’. This block of reforms is considered key to the negotiation process and will remain open until its conclusion, setting the overall pace of Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.
