The Admiral Nakhimov may be being prepared for a return to sea
This was reported by UNIAN.
The ship has been moved to a special berth
According to analysts, the cruiser was recently moved to the demagnetisation berth at the Sevmash shipyard. At such facilities, the hull is demagnetised — a mandatory procedure before the ship sets sail following repairs or modernisation. Experts believe that this move may indicate that the vessel is being prepared for a new phase of testing. Certain stages of testing the modernised cruiser have already been carried out, notably in 2025.
The cruiser could become a replacement for the ‘Peter the Great’
The modernisation of the Admiral Nakhimov has been ongoing for over a quarter of a century and has been postponed on numerous occasions. Upon completion of the work, the ship is set to receive significantly upgraded armament, including universal launchers for Kalibr, Onyx and Zircon missiles. The intensification of work is linked to the technical condition of another Russian nuclear-powered cruiser, the ‘Peter the Great’, which requires extensive repairs and may be withdrawn from the fleet. At the same time, military experts note that in the current climate, large surface vessels remain vulnerable targets. Therefore, the significance of the Admiral Nakhimov for Russia may be not only military but also symbolic — as a demonstration of the Russian Navy’s capabilities.
