The EU has extended its sanctions against Russia for a year
This was announced by Maria Tomásik, spokesperson for the President of the European Council.
The decision to extend the sanctions was taken during a meeting of the European Council.
According to Maria Tomásik, sectoral economic restrictions against Russia will remain in place for a further year instead of the usual six months.
These sanctions target key sectors of the Russian economy and are one of the EU’s main tools for exerting pressure on Moscow.
How EU countries voted
The spokesperson for the President of the European Council emphasised that the decision was supported by all 27 Member States of the European Union.
According to her, this is the first time that the extension of sectoral sanctions for such a period has been approved unanimously by all EU countries.
What led up to the decision
The European Council meeting began with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Following his address, the meeting continued in the form of talks between the heads of state and government of the EU member states.
The issue of sanctions policy towards Russia was one of the key items on the agenda.
The EU’s sectoral sanctions against Russia were introduced following the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine and have been extended on several occasions.
The day before, US President Donald Trump stated that he did not rule out the possibility of reinstating sanctions pressure on Russia, but refused to place greater blame for the war on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
