The National Bank has increased its foreign currency sales to over a billion dollars
As at 1 July, Ukraine’s international reserves stood at 51.27 billion dollars.
Between 13 and 17 July, the National Bank sold 1.074 billion dollars on the interbank foreign exchange market. This is 203.09 million dollars, or almost a quarter, more than the previous week.

This is evidenced by the results of the NBU’s foreign exchange interventions.

During the reporting week, the regulator did not purchase any foreign currency. A week earlier, the National Bank sold 871.22 million dollars and purchased 400,000 dollars.

Since the start of 2026, the National Bank’s total foreign exchange sales have reached $25.794 billion. At the same time, the regulator purchased $1.05 million.

The NBU carried out its first currency purchase transactions of 2026 in July. Between January and June, the National Bank only sold currency, injecting a total of over 23.35 billion dollars into the market.

Why does the National Bank sell foreign currency?

Since October 2023, Ukraine has been operating under a managed floating exchange rate regime. The hryvnia exchange rate may fluctuate depending on supply and demand, but the NBU maintains an active presence in the foreign exchange market.

According to the regulator, foreign exchange interventions make it possible to offset the structural foreign currency deficit and limit excessive exchange rate fluctuations.

A significant volume of foreign currency sales does not automatically mean a reduction in international reserves by the same amount. Their level also depends on inflows of international aid, payments on public debt and the revaluation of financial assets.

As of 1 July, Ukraine’s international reserves stood at $51.27 billion. In June, they rose by 12.1 per cent, as foreign exchange inflows from partners exceeded the National Bank’s currency sales and the state’s external debt repayments.
