The number of funeral agencies in Russia is rising rapidly — media reports
This is reported by the Russian newspaper *Kommersant*.
In total, there are currently 11,500 organisations operating in Russia linked to the funeral industry — their number has risen by 7.6 per cent over the past year. The majority of them (81 per cent) are small businesses.
In addition, Russians’ spending on funeral services has also risen: between January and May 2026 alone, 57.8 billion roubles were spent on such services.
As the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia (Rosstat) has stopped publishing public statistics on mortality, Russians attribute this growth to legal factors. In this way, entrepreneurs are allegedly seeking to bring their businesses out of the ‘shadow economy’ and receive compensation from the state budget.
The media also suggest that the increase in the number of companies offering funeral services is linked to changes in Russian tax legislation.
It should be recalled that, according to British intelligence estimates, Russia lost nearly half a million of its military personnel between the start of the full-scale invasion and May 2026.
Last winter, Washington estimated Russian losses at 1.2 million military personnel, of whom 325,000 were killed. They stated that no major power had suffered “even close to such a number of casualties or deaths since the Second World War”.
