The Pentagon is concerned about possible surveillance by Israel — NBC News
This is according to NBC News, citing current and former US officials.
The US is concerned about intelligence gathering by Israel
According to the publication’s sources, the Pentagon’s Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) has in recent weeks prepared a new assessment of counter-intelligence risks and raised the threat level regarding Israel to ‘critical’. According to NBC News sources, there are concerns within the Pentagon that Israel may be attempting to obtain information about internal discussions within US President Donald Trump’s administration regarding conflicts in the Middle East. The DIA document, according to the channel’s sources, refers to Israel’s high capabilities in the field of intelligence gathering. At the same time, the Israeli embassy in Washington has categorically rejected these claims.
“Israel does not gather intelligence on American organisations, let alone on US government officials,” a spokesperson for the embassy said.
The diplomatic mission emphasised that Israeli intelligence focuses on the country’s adversaries, not its allies.
Tensions between the US and Israel
The Pentagon declined to comment on the DIA assessment. The White House also dismissed the report as false, stating that it came from someone who “has no idea what is going on”. According to NBC News, the release of this assessment coincided with tensions between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over further action regarding Iran. In particular, Washington is seeking a diplomatic solution, whilst differences remain between the parties regarding military scenarios in the region.
