The UK has announced new sanctions against Russia’s energy sector and support for Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a new package of sanctions against Russia during the G7 summit in Evian, France, and confirmed the conclusion of an agreement to support Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector, according to Politico.
The new restrictive measures will target Russia’s shadow fleet, which is used to circumvent sanctions. The decision was taken after British forces intercepted a tanker carrying banned oil cargo at the weekend. The sanctions will also target financial networks used to circumvent restrictions and supply the Russian military.
Separately, an embargo is planned on a number of vessels transporting Russian liquefied natural gas, which is subject to sanctions.
Keir Starmer also welcomed the conclusion of an agreement providing for the use of £210 million through UK Export Finance to support the British company Urenco. It will supply enriched uranium to the Ukrainian nuclear energy operator Energoatom over the next two years.
The deal was agreed during a recent meeting between Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Russian aggression threatens not only Ukraine but the security of the whole of Europe. That is why the UK is stepping up its efforts to cut off the revenues fuelling Putin’s war and to help Ukraine get through the coming winters,” said the British Prime Minister.
The G7 summit began with a session dedicated to peace and security for Ukraine and Europe. It is expected that during the discussion, Keir Starmer will call on the leaders of the Group of Seven to step up joint efforts to ensure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
