There is talk within the German Chancellor’s party of replacing him – Bild
This is according to the tabloid *Bild*.
The leadership of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) – a party in Germany’s ruling coalition – has begun discussing a possible replacement for Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
According to Bild, a scenario involving a change of government leader mid-term is circulating among party insiders.
As the publication has learned, discussions are focusing on:
- under what circumstances replacing Merz could become a realistic option;
- who exactly should hold talks with him should such a decision be taken.
The publication does not name any specific potential successors, but emphasises that the discussions have already moved beyond informal backroom debates.
It should be recalled that Germany previously proposed granting Ukraine leverage within the European Union without waiting for full membership. Chancellor Friedrich Merz sent a letter to the EU leadership detailing a proposal for ‘associated membership’ for Kyiv.
