SES warns: refuelling a generator during operation can cause a fire
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine warns citizens against dangerous actions when using generators, heating and gas appliances. This was announced by Viktor Vitovetskyi, Director of the Department of Civil Protection and Preventive Activities of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, during a briefing.
According to him, refuelling the generator during operation is strictly prohibited, as fuel can get on hot engine elements and lead to fire. The generator should be refuelled only after the equipment is completely switched off and cooled down.
The SES representative also advises, if possible, to involve professional organisations in the installation and maintenance of generators, as independent use of such equipment without proper knowledge often leads to mistakes and dangerous situations.
Vitovetskyi also drew special attention to the proper storage of fuel. According to him, it is dangerous to put cans of petrol or diesel directly on or near the generator, even if the purpose is to prevent the fuel from freezing. The fuel should be stored at a safe distance, not in living quarters, and if possible, use a delivery service.
In addition, the SES reminded of the rules for using stove heating. There must be a metal sheet under the furnace opening, and the distance to furniture and combustible materials must be at least 1.25 metres. It is forbidden to light the stove with flammable substances, as well as to dry clothes on stoves or electrical appliances.
Rescuers also warn against installing antennas, transmitters or other structures directly on chimneys and roofs of houses. As for gas appliances, the SES emphasises that in the event of a gas smell, it is strictly forbidden to search for the leakage site with an open flame. In such cases, you should immediately stop using the devices and contact the relevant services. Also, the use of gas equipment should not be entrusted to children.
The SES urges citizens to follow basic safety rules, as most fires in the home occur due to neglect of basic warnings.
