A scheme to smuggle methadone in Wi-Fi modems has been uncovered at the Kropyvnytskyi prison
Officers from the State Bureau of Investigations, in collaboration with the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine, have put a stop to the supply of methadone to Kropyvnytskyi Correctional Colony No. 6.
The investigation established that the head of one of the colony’s departments, together with former and current inmates, had organised a scheme to deliver drugs onto the premises.
According to the investigation, former inmates sent postal parcels, listing the official as the recipient. The parcels contained Wi-Fi modems, inside which packets of methadone were concealed.
The official brought these devices into the prison and handed them over to the inmates for onward sale.
On 23 March 2026, law enforcement officers detained the suspects during another attempt to deliver drugs.
The head of the department and his four accomplices were notified of their status as suspects under Part 2 of Article 307 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for liability for the illegal sale of drugs in places of deprivation of liberty.
The issue of imposing a preventive measure is currently being decided. The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment.
The Kirovohrad Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings in the case.
