The leader of the CJNG drug cartel has been eliminated in Mexico: riots have swept across the country
This was reported by The Public with reference to Reuters.
Nemesio Ochoa, a former police officer, was the de facto leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG), considered one of the most influential criminal groups in Mexico.
According to the agency's sources, the operation to arrest him was carried out by the Mexican Ministry of Defence. As a result, Ochoa was killed. A reward of $15 million had previously been offered for his arrest.
Osejo was accused of organising the smuggling of large quantities of drugs, including cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine, into the United States across the southern border.
The operation took place against the backdrop of increased pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump on the Mexican authorities to step up the fight against drug trafficking.
After Osejera's elimination, large-scale riots broke out in regions where the CJNG cartel operates. Armed groups blocked roads and set fire to vehicles, petrol stations, pharmacies and shops in various areas of Jalisco state, including Guadalajara and the coast to Puerto Vallarta.
The wave of violence also spread to neighbouring regions. In particular, roadblocks were reported in several municipalities in the state of Michoacán.
