Magnitude 6.5 earthquake kills two people in Mexico
On Friday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck southern and central regions of Mexico. The epicentre was near the resort town of Acapulco near San Marcos in the state of Guerrero, where moderate damage was reported, DW reported.
A 50-year-old woman has died in the state of Guerrero, Governor Evelyn Salgado said. The mayor of Mexico City Clara Brugada confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man and reported at least 12 wounded in the capital
According to the city authorities, 98 per cent of the reported outages in Mexico City have been restored. Two buildings are being checked for the risk of collapse, while another 34 buildings and five houses are being inspected as a preventive measure. Reuters reported damage to roads and hospitals, as well as landslides on motorways in Guerrero
The Mexican Seismological Service recorded 420 aftershocks by noon. The country is located in a seismically active zone at the junction of four tectonic plates
