In Mykolaiv, parents suspected of selling a newborn child for $10,000
In Mykolaiv, law enforcement officers have uncovered an attempt to sell a newborn baby. According to the police, a 21-year-old woman and her 38-year-old partner agreed to hand over the baby to an unauthorised person for $10,000. They received part of the money in the form of a deposit before the birth, the National Police of Ukraine reports.
The investigation found that the couple started looking for buyers during their pregnancy. After the birth of the child on 2 January, the parents implemented the agreement and handed over the baby near the maternity hospital. They were detained by the police immediately afterwards.
The defendants were served a notice of suspicion under the article on human trafficking in relation to a minor. The court imposed a measure of restraint in the form of custody with the possibility of bail. The sanction of the article provides for up to 15 years in prison. The regional prosecutor's office is providing procedural control.
