The Ministry of Defence has responded to the murder of a soldier from the Temporary Coordination Centre in Lviv, stating that no systemic issue can justify such a crime.

The ministry acknowledged that the mobilisation system requires changes and that these “will be implemented in the near future”.

On the afternoon of 2 April, during a drill in Lviv, an unknown assailant stabbed a member of the Territorial Defence Forces in the neck – he died in hospital from his injuries.

The police detained the suspected attacker – a man born in 1991 who turned out to be an employee of Lviv Customs. This was later confirmed by the State Customs Service.

The motives for the crime are being established. Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal case on charges of murder. The offence carries a sentence of 10 to 15 years’ imprisonment or life imprisonment.
