Ukraine calls for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council following a large-scale attack by the Russian Federation
This has been reported by Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Andriy Sibiga. The information has also been confirmed by Interfax-Ukraine and the Anadolu Agency.
Why Ukraine has appealed to the UN Security Council
According to Andriy Sibiga, Kyiv has appealed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which holds the presidency of the UN Security Council in July, requesting that an emergency meeting be convened without delay in response to a new large-scale Russian attack.
The Foreign Minister emphasised that Russia is continuing its systematic attacks on Ukrainian cities, resulting in civilian deaths and the destruction of critical infrastructure. He called on Security Council members to provide a clear international response to this latest act of Russian aggression.
Consequences of the latest attack
According to official figures from the Ukrainian authorities, 11 people were killed and a further 46 were injured as a result of Russia’s combined night-time attack.
This is the second large-scale strike on Ukraine in the last few days. During the attack on 2 July, at least 31 people were killed and over 100 were injured.
The Ukrainian authorities emphasise that Russia continues to deliberately target civilian facilities and residential areas, resulting in significant loss of life.
What the Security Council may consider
Ukraine expects the UN Security Council to discuss the latest escalation of Russian strikes and the need to step up international pressure on Moscow.
At the same time, Security Council decisions may be blocked by Russia, which is a permanent member of the Security Council and holds a veto. Despite this, Kyiv regularly calls for emergency meetings to bring the issue of Russian aggression to the international stage and to record the position of UN member states.
