What is happening with air quality in Vyshneve: is there a risk, and where can you find the latest data?
Vyshneve
On the morning of 6 July, a significant deterioration in air quality was observed in the town of Vyshneve, in the Kyiv region. The pollution level was classified as ‘red’ – harmful to human health.

For more details on the current situation and the current air quality levels in Vyshneve, read the article on ThePublic.

Are the causes of the pollution known at present?

Meteorologists say that specialists at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre currently have no precise information regarding the air quality situation in Vyshneve.

“And, it seems, we will not be able to provide such information today,” said Ivan Semylyt, a meteorologist at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre

At the same time, Semylit noted that the State Emergency Service (SES) might “issue a statement in the next few days or even today”.

“Because at the moment we have received no instructions from the State Emergency Service, and no information has been passed on to us yet. So I cannot comment on this for the time being,” stated the representative of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre.

What weather to expect in the Kyiv region

Generally speaking, an area of low atmospheric pressure will prevail across the Kyiv region today.

Winds are expected to be westerly, at speeds of 7–12 m/s.

Although gusts of up to 15–20 m/s are likely in some parts of the Kyiv region, temperatures will range between +22 and +24°C.

Can the weather affect air quality?

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre states that as rain falls, it will wash away pollutants present in the atmosphere.

However, they do not specify exactly which pollutants may be present in the air above Vyshneve today.

What the State Emergency Service says about the situation in Vyshneve

Viktoria Ruban, head of the media relations and public affairs department at the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kyiv region, stated that she would not be commenting on air quality. According to her, “there are relevant services that provide comments on air quality”.

“We are dealing with the clean-up… The clean-up is currently underway here,” stated the State Emergency Service representative.

At the same time, information on the air quality situation in Vyshneve can be obtained from the Ukrainian environmental monitoring system SaveEcoBot (which monitors air quality data in real time).

According to SaveEcoBot, this level of air pollution in the town could cause breathing difficulties:

  • in people with lung conditions (such as asthma);
  • people with heart conditions;
  • children;
  • the elderly.

As of 12:00 on 6 July, the air quality index in Vyshneve had fallen to 68 – ‘Moderate’ (yellow).

According to SaveEcoBot, this level of air pollution may cause slight breathing discomfort in sensitive individuals.

Therefore, based on the available data, it can be concluded that the air quality situation in Vyshneve is gradually improving.

Local residents are advised to:

  • drink more water;
  • keep windows closed;
  • to monitor their health closely and keep an eye on any further changes in air quality.

As a reminder, on the morning of 3 July, high levels of air pollution were recorded in Kyiv as a result of a massive Russian attack and a forest fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
