Ukraine has opened a case against the Chief of the Russian General Staff, Gerasimov, over yesterday’s strike on Kyiv
This was reported by the press offices of the Office of the Prosecutor General and the SBU.
According to the investigation, Gerasimov, acting in collusion with the leadership, organised the attack and utilised long-range aviation, the Black Sea Fleet, the Ground Forces and unmanned aerial vehicle units, which carried out a drone and missile strike on the capital.
Ukraine has opened a case regarding violations of the laws and customs of war. As part of this case, other large-scale strikes on Ukraine are also being investigated.
The attack on Kyiv on 2 July: what is known
On the night of 2 July, the Russians attacked Ukraine with 496 drones and 74 missiles. Air defence systems intercepted 476 UAVs and 48 missiles.
The Russian Armed Forces simultaneously deployed ballistic, anti-ship, cruise and air-launched missiles. The Air Force states that one of the distinctive features of the attack was the large number of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones.
The main target of the strike was Kyiv. The Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Pecherskyi, Podilskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Darnytskyi and Obolonskyi districts were under attack. Apartment blocks and private homes, non-residential buildings, a business centre, a market and parked cars were damaged or partially destroyed.
In total, over 130 buildings in the capital were damaged. Animals at the zoo were also affected, and a key warehouse belonging to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society was destroyed.
Energy infrastructure was also affected by the attack. As of now, 30 people are known to have been killed and 99 injured.
