The Verkhovna Rada is preparing to increase fines for speeding. Specifically, the proposal involves a fine of 17,000 UAH for five or more speeding offences in a year.

This was announced by MP Olga Vasilevska-Smaglyuk.

Currently, the fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h is 340 hryvnias, and for exceeding it by more than 50 km/h — 1,700 hryvnias.

However, the new draft law proposes introducing a new scale of fines:

  • over 20 km/h — 680 hryvnias;
  • over 40 km/h — 2,040 hryvnias;
  • over 60 km/h — 2,720 hryvnias;
  • over 80 km/h — 3,400 hryvnias.

Separately, there are plans to increase penalties for drivers who regularly exceed the speed limit. For five or more instances of speeding within a year, the fine could reach 17,000 hryvnias.

The draft bill was developed jointly with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Police to increase the penalties for offences that lead to accidents. However, the document has yet to be considered by the Verkhovna Rada.

Back on 9 June, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that the Ministry of Internal Affairs would soon introduce a system to automatically record the number and severity of traffic offences.

It should be recalled that on 5 June, a road traffic accident occurred in the Solomyanskyi district of Kyiv, in which four people were killed, including a child and two police officers.Three more people were injured. It transpired that the driver of the Mercedes had committed 39 traffic offences, 18 of which were in the past year.
