Ukrainian pilots are already undergoing training on the Gripen
The Ukrainian military has already begun training to operate the Swedish Gripen fighter jets. This was announced by the Swedish Minister of Defence, Paul Jonsson.
According to him, the transfer of Gripen aircraft will mark a new stage in the development of Ukraine’s air defence.
“Ukraine is not simply receiving aircraft. Ukraine is building a modern air force capable of fighting, surviving and adapting in the most challenging conditions in Europe,” Jonsson noted.
The minister said that training for Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel is already underway. At the same time, there are plans to significantly expand the training programme in the autumn.
Once the necessary permits have been obtained, deliveries of Gripen C/D fighter jets to Ukraine are scheduled to begin early next year.
Jonsson emphasised that the aim is to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities as quickly as possible and to establish a modern Air Force for the coming decades.
“A stronger Ukrainian Air Force makes Ukraine safer, Europe stronger, and leaves less room for Russian aggression,” the minister stated.
He also noted that the transfer of the aircraft is part of Sweden’s 22nd military aid package to Ukraine. Taking this package into account, the total amount of military support provided by Sweden since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion stands at around €11.8 billion.
