Ukrainian Statehood Day 2026: the history and significance of the holiday
On 15 July 2026, Ukraine celebrates Ukrainian Statehood Day.
Today, 15 July 2026, Ukraine is celebrating Ukrainian Statehood Day. The holiday highlights the continuity of Ukrainian statehood — from Kievan Rus’ to the restoration of independence in 1991 and modern-day Ukraine.

This is stated by the Office of the President in a decree establishing Ukrainian Statehood Day. The document links the holiday to the more than thousand-year history of Ukrainian statehood, Prince Volodymyr the Great, and Rus’s civilisational choice following the adoption of Christianity in 988.

When was Ukrainian Statehood Day established?

Ukrainian Statehood Day was established by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 24 August 2021, marking the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence. The relevant decree No. 423/2021 came into force on the day of its publication.

Initially, the holiday was celebrated on 28 July — the day commemorating Saint Vladimir the Great, Prince of Kyiv and Equal to the Apostles, and the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus’-Ukraine. This is precisely how this commemorative date is formulated in the presidential decree.

In 2023, the Verkhovna Rada changed the dates of several public holidays following the Ukrainian churches’ transition to the new calendar. Article 73 of the Labour Code established 15 July as Ukrainian Statehood Day. The holiday has been celebrated on this new date since 2024.

Why is the holiday associated with Prince Volodymyr?

15 July commemorates Prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv. During his reign, in 988, Rus’ adopted Christianity, a decision that shaped the state’s subsequent political, cultural and civilisational development.

A presidential decree refers to Prince Volodymyr the Great as the founder of the state, who, by adopting Christianity, demonstrated Rus’s civilisational choice. It is precisely his era that the official document links to the flourishing of the state centred on Kyiv.

In standard written texts, it is correct to use the terms ‘Rus’, ‘the Baptism of Rus’ and ‘the statehood of Rus’. The terms ‘Kyiv Rus’ and ‘Day of the Baptism of Kyiv Rus-Ukraine’ are appropriate when quoting the decree and reproducing the official name of the commemorative date.

What does Ukrainian Statehood Day signify?

The holiday is intended to affirm the continuity of over a thousand years of Ukrainian statehood. Its significance lies in the fact that modern Ukraine continues the political, legal and cultural traditions of previous state formations on Ukrainian lands.

The decree traces the origins of this tradition to the founding of Kyiv and the development of Rus’ under Prince Volodymyr the Great. Among its successors, the document names the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia, the Ukrainian Cossack State, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the West Ukrainian People’s Republic, the Ukrainian State, Carpathian Ukraine and modern Ukraine.

The decree also honours figures who influenced the formation of Ukrainian national consciousness and the struggle for statehood. The document mentions Taras Shevchenko, Mykola Kostomarov, Volodymyr Antonovych, Mykhailo Drahomanov, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka and Mykhailo Hrushevsky.

Key stages in the formation of the Ukrainian state

The official concept of the holiday links the origins of the Ukrainian state tradition to Rus’, whose political centre was Kyiv. The next important stage was the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia, which continued the state tradition of Rus’.

In the 17th–18th centuries, the Ukrainian Cossack State had its own government, army and diplomatic service. The history of the Hetmanate became an important part of the Ukrainian political and military tradition.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ukrainians established the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the West Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Ukrainian State. A separate stage in state-building was Carpathian Ukraine, whose independence was proclaimed in 1939.

On 24 August 1991, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine. During the all-Ukrainian referendum on 1 December, citizens confirmed this decision. The decree on Ukrainian Statehood Day is directly based on the Act and the results of the national vote.

How does Statehood Day differ from Independence Day?

Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Act of Declaration of Independence on 24 August 1991. This is the date marking the restoration of the independent Ukrainian state in its present form.

Ukrainian Statehood Day encompasses a much longer historical period. It highlights the connection between Rus’, the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia, the Cossack State, the Ukrainian state formations of the 20th century and modern-day Ukraine.

Thus, the two holidays have different emphases. Independence Day commemorates the decision of 1991, whilst Ukrainian Statehood Day commemorates the historical preconditions, the centuries-long struggle and the continuity of the Ukrainian state tradition.

The decree establishing the holiday specifically refers to the defence of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence, as well as the affirmation of historical justice.

Amid Russian aggression, Ukrainian Statehood Day serves as a reminder that Ukraine has its own long history, political tradition and the right to determine its own future. The holiday also counters Russian attempts to appropriate the legacy of Rus’ and to deny the distinctiveness of Ukrainian statehood.
