Ukrainians have cited the reasons for their lack of trust in Zelensky
This is according to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).
36 per cent of Ukrainians do not trust the president. Sociologists asked 50 respondents additional questions to find out the main reasons.
Long-standing grievances and broken promises
The most common reason for mistrust is not linked to current events. 40% of those surveyed say their sceptical attitude towards Zelenskyy was formed before 2022, and in some cases even before 2019.
Some give specific reasons: the withdrawal of troops, certain statements and the president’s behaviour even in peacetime. One respondent noted that she has “held a negative view of Zelenskyy and his actions since the 95th Quarter”.
What other reasons are cited
The remaining reasons were distributed as follows:
- 32% – he is not making enough effort to end the war;
- 28% – has not fulfilled his election promises;
- 20% – corruption (two out of ten specifically mentioned the “Mindich case”);
- 18% – personnel policy: appointing close associates, dismissing specialists;
- 12% – incompetence in public administration;
- 10% – activities of the Territorial Defence Forces and mobilisation;
- 10% – decline in living standards and rising prices.
What is missing from the list of reasons
None of those surveyed cited the absence of elections as a reason. Only one respondent mentioned restrictions on freedom of speech, and another noted that the president is “clinging to power”.
70% of those who do not trust the president say their attitude has not changed over the last 1–2 months. A further 26% note that it has worsened. Only 4% noted some improvement – although they still do not trust him.
At the same time, 46% of those who do not trust him believe that Zelenskyy should remain president until the end of the war. In contrast, 42% insist on his resignation as soon as possible.
