Ukrainians expect the war to continue for another year, but their patience is wearing thin — survey
An end to the war in Ukraine
More than 30% of Ukrainians believe that Russia’s war against Ukraine could end by the end of 2026. At the same time, half of those surveyed are prepared to endure the situation for as long as it takes.

This is according to the findings of a study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

Timeline for the end of the war

According to the survey, 17% of Ukrainians expect the war to end by at least the summer of 2026, whilst a further 14% expect it to end by the end of the year. In total, 31% believe that hostilities will cease by the end of 2026.

Almost half (48%) of those surveyed expect the war to end in 2027, with 38% of them specifying the second half of the year.

As before, a significant proportion (21%) have no definite opinion on this matter.

Thus, Ukrainians are predominantly of the view that the war will continue for a considerable period.

How many Ukrainians are prepared to endure the war for longer?

The downward trend in the proportion of those willing to endure the war for as long as necessary continued in April.

While 54% held this view at the start of March, the figure had fallen to 48% by the end of April.

A further 4% are prepared to endure it for one year, meaning that a total of 52% now speak of a relatively long period (57% in March).

Meanwhile, the proportion of those willing to endure a short period (a few months to six months) has not changed – 28% in March and 29% in April.

However, there is a trend towards increasing uncertainty – whilst 16% were unable to answer this question in March, the figure is now 19%.
