This year’s summer season for passenger transport will be more challenging than last year’s, due to a sharp rise in demand and a reduction in the number of carriages.

This has been reported by the press office of Ukrzaliznytsia.

The company noted that the current average ratio of demand to the number of seats on trains is 4 to 1, and in summer this could rise to 6 passengers per seat.

On certain routes, the situation is even more challenging. In particular, nearly 10,000 people are looking for tickets daily on services from Lviv to Kyiv.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian troops have destroyed 46 passenger carriages. A further 200 carriages, as well as one Intercity+ train, require repairs following shelling, drone attacks and other damage.

In addition, over a thousand carriages are awaiting technical inspection and may be taken out of service due to wear and tear and being in an unfit condition.

Ukrzaliznytsia advises passengers to plan their journeys in advance and purchase tickets 20 days before travel.

The company also recommends using the automatic ticket purchase function. According to the carrier, 150,000 passengers have used this service since the start of the year, purchasing around one million tickets.

In addition, passengers are advised to consider routes involving changes, particularly using air-conditioned commuter trains.

For international travel, Ukrzaliznytsia recommends considering airports in Moldova, Romania and Hungary, as it is easier to reach them during the peak season than Polish cities.

The company has assured that it is continuing to build new carriages and speeding up the repair of rolling stock to increase transport availability during peak periods.
