In April, Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Ukraine’s Recovery and Minister for Community and Territorial Development, announced that work was underway to launch a new international route for Ukrzaliznytsia. According to him, a trial run of the ‘Kyiv–Varna’ service could take place as early as this summer.

This was reported by the Ukrzaliznytsia press office on the social media platform Threads.

One passenger asked when tickets for the train to Varna would be available, what the timetable would be, and how much the tickets would cost. In response, Ukrzaliznytsia noted that the launch of a direct service to Bulgaria depends not only on the technical readiness of the railways.

The company reported that it is currently engaged in active negotiations with European partners regarding the timetable, the allocation of train paths, border procedures and fares.

Ukrzaliznytsia also emphasised that launching an international route is a complex process requiring approval from several countries simultaneously.

The carrier added that once all the necessary permits have been obtained, the timetable, ticket prices and the date when sales begin will be published immediately.

As a reminder, Ukrzaliznytsia had previously warned of a ticket shortage during the summer season.
