Iran has completed the formation of a temporary council that will perform the functions of the supreme leader until his successor is determined.

On 1 March, Iran completed the formation of a temporary leadership council that will exercise the powers of the supreme leader until his successor is elected following the death of Ali Khamenei. This was reported by Sky News, citing Iranian state sources.

According to the ISNA agency, Ayatollah Alireza Arafai has been appointed to the council as a member-lawyer. He thus became the third and last member of the temporary body.

Arafi was previously known as a preacher and writer. In 2015, he was elected to the Assembly of Experts, the body authorised to determine Iran's next supreme leader.

In addition to him, the Leadership Council includes Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Head of the Judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei.

Earlier, Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said on state television that the interim council would be formed as soon as possible.
