Testing of Ukraine’s first Skif tracked armoured personnel carrier has begun
The Ukrainian company UkrArmoTech has begun factory trials of a prototype of the Skif tracked armoured personnel carrier. For the company, which previously specialised in wheeled armoured vehicles, this is its first project in the tracked combat vehicle segment. This was reported by Defense Express.
The new armoured personnel carrier has been developed drawing on experience from the war against Russia and the operation of American M113-type vehicles currently in use in Ukraine. The requirements for the new vehicle called for enhanced protection and firepower without compromising mobility.
The Skif APC is designed to transport personnel from mechanised units and provide fire support. The vehicle is designed for a crew of three and can also carry eight paratroopers. Entry and exit are via a ramp at the rear of the hull.
The prototype was manufactured using aluminium armour, marking the first such experience for Ukrainian manufacturers. However, a final decision on the hull material for mass production has not yet been made. The possibility of using armour steel is being considered, given the restrictions on the supply of armour-grade aluminium.
The aim of the tests is to verify the vehicle’s concept, its performance characteristics and reliability. The tests will involve maximum loads and dynamic testing of key components.
According to preliminary estimates, the weight of the armoured personnel carrier in its fully equipped configuration is up to 15 tonnes, with an engine power of 360 horsepower. The design allows for the installation of engines from various manufacturers.
The ballistic protection level for the front section is stated as STANAG 4569 Level 4, and Level 3 for the sides and rear. Mine protection corresponds to Levels 3a and 3b. The vehicle is expected to withstand the detonation of up to 6 kilograms of explosives under the tracks or hull.
The APC can be equipped with a remotely controlled combat module featuring a 12.7 mm or 14.5 mm machine gun, with an additional 7.62 mm machine gun. Provision has been made for the installation of communications, navigation, electronic warfare and other equipment manufactured in Ukraine.
Key components, including the engine, transmission, suspension and tracks, are planned to be imported at the initial stage. It is estimated that the proportion of imported components could be up to 60 per cent, with a subsequent transition to localised production.
Gennadiy Khirgiy, CEO of UkrArmoTech, noted that the development is based on the military’s requirements and experience of using the equipment in combat conditions. According to him, tracked vehicles have advantages in terms of cross-country capability and resistance to damage on difficult terrain.
The company is also considering the possibility of supplying both wheeled and tracked armoured vehicles to foreign markets. Negotiations on this are already underway.
