The Vice-President of the European Parliament has reported a cyberattack by Russian hackers on Signal
Pina Picerno reported this on the social media platform X.
Pina Picerno, Vice-President of the European Parliament, has reported an attempt to hack her account on the Signal messaging app.
According to the official, the available technical evidence points to a probable link between the incident and a coordinated campaign by Russian intelligence services.
“Recently, there was an attempt to hack my Signal account. According to the available technical evidence, there is likely a link to a coordinated campaign attributed to the Russian intelligence services, the FSB,” Picerno stated.
She emphasised that the situation is serious, as Signal is used to communicate with dissidents, colleagues and confidential sources.
Picherno reported that the relevant services of the European Parliament will check her devices to determine whether there has been a data breach.
The Vice-President of the European Parliament has also already filed a complaint with the Italian authorities.
According to her, such attacks are not isolated incidents.
“These are not isolated incidents, but part of a systematic hybrid war against European institutions,” Picerno emphasised.
She also stated that a similar attack had been directed against an independent researcher.
According to Picerno, this researcher had recently passed on to her details of meetings between lobbyists and representatives of Russian and Belarusian interests in Brussels.
As reported by ThePublic, the hacking of the Bundestag President’s Signal account has been linked to a Russian phishing campaign.
