From toy to film: Sony is set to produce a film based on the popular ‘Laboubou’ doll
The BBC reports this.
The animated feature film is currently in the ‘early stages of development’.
The film will be directed by Paul King, whose credits include the Paddington film series, the 2023 film Wonka starring Timothée Chalamet, and a number of British comedy series.
Thanks to the popularity of ‘Labubu’ toys in recent years, Pop Mart’s sales have risen to nearly $40 billion, surpassing such well-known competitors as Mattel — the maker of ‘Barbie’ dolls. Thanks to these profits, Pop Mart is opening a theme park in Beijing and is now collaborating with the film industry.
‘Labubu’ is a brand of collectable plush toys in the form of monsters, created by Hong Kong designer Kashing Lung. Part of their appeal lies in the fact that they are sold in sealed boxes — buyers do not know exactly which ‘Labubu’ they are getting until they open the packaging.
