Weather on 28 July 2026: which regions will be affected by thunderstorms and squalls
This has been reported by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre.
Thunderstorms are expected during the day in the north-eastern part of Ukraine, most of the central regions, as well as in the Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
In some areas, hail and squalls with wind speeds of 15–20 m/s are possible. A yellow (first) danger level is in effect for these regions. Such weather conditions may disrupt traffic and cause damage to trees, advertising structures and power lines.
The heaviest rain is forecast for the central regions, as well as in the Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Significant rainfall is possible overnight in the Vinnytsia region.
In the east and south-east of Ukraine, it will remain mainly dry overnight, but during the day the precipitation zone will shift in that direction.
Where the wind will pick up
In most regions, north-westerly winds of 7–12 m/s will prevail.
In the western regions, gusts of up to 15–20 m/s are forecast in places, even outside thunderstorm areas. During bad weather, do not leave cars under old trees, advertising hoardings or unstable structures.
What will the temperature be?
Overnight, temperatures will range from +13 to +18 degrees. It will be cooler in the western regions – from +10 to +15.
During the day, temperatures are forecast to range from +21 to +26 degrees in most regions. In the south-east, temperatures will reach +29.

On 29 and 30 July, rainfall will cease in most regions. Only on 29 July are short showers and thunderstorms still possible in some parts of the east.
Overnight, temperatures will drop to between +10 and +15 degrees, whilst daytime temperatures are expected to range from +21 to +26. In Zakarpattia and the south, and on 30 July across almost the whole of Ukraine, temperatures will rise to between +24 and +29 degrees.
Are temperatures of +42 degrees and frosts forecast for August?
Reports of an alleged forecast for August of heatwaves reaching up to +42 degrees and frosts arose due to a misinterpretation of climate statistics. These figures represent all-time temperature records for the entire period of observation, not a forecast for August 2026.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre expects an average monthly temperature of between +21 and +25 degrees, and in mountainous areas between +17 and +19 degrees. In most regions, this is approximately two degrees above the climatic norm.
In Kyiv, the movement of heavy goods vehicles may be restricted when the temperature exceeds +28 degrees. The rule applies to vehicles with a gross weight of over 24 tonnes or with an axle load of more than seven tonnes.
