In Bukovina, a man opened fire on police officers during an investigation and fled into the woods
In the village of Yizhivtsi, Chernivtsi District, law enforcement officers are searching for a 54-year-old local resident who, during investigative proceedings, opened fire on police officers with a hunting rifle and fled.
According to the National Police, at around 07:45 on 28 July, police officers arrived at the man’s home to carry out investigative procedures as part of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine concerning the unlawful handling of weapons.
Whilst the officers were carrying out these procedures, the man fired several shots at the police officers from a hunting rifle, after which he fled towards a wooded area.
Two police officers were injured in the shooting. The injured are receiving the necessary medical attention.
A special police operation has been launched in the Chernivtsi region to locate and apprehend the armed man. The necessary police resources have been deployed for the search operation.
Law enforcement officers are urging members of the public to remain vigilant. If you have any information regarding the possible whereabouts of the suspect or if you spot a suspicious individual, you must immediately call the emergency number ‘102’. The police emphasise that members of the public should not attempt to detain the armed man themselves.
Initial investigative and search operations are currently underway.
