The award ceremony took place in Middelburg. The award was presented to Zelenskyy by Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Elizabeth Roosevelt Johnston. King Willem-Alexander and Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands were also present at the event.

Reuters and AP note that the President of Ukraine accepted the award on behalf of all Ukrainians. The Roosevelt Foundation explained that the 2026 award was presented to Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine in recognition of their courageous struggle for freedom and democracy under extremely difficult circumstances.

During the ceremony, Zelenskyy called for a minute’s silence for the victims of the latest Russian attacks. In his speech, he stated that freedom from fear remains elusive for many people, and emphasised the need for protection against those who bring ruin and seek to destroy normal life.

The President also called on partners to continue supporting Ukraine – militarily, politically and legally. In his address, he specifically named Vladimir Putin as a global threat and stressed that accountability for war crimes must become part of future security in Europe.

The ‘Four Freedoms’ Award is named after US President Franklin Roosevelt’s 1941 speech, in which he articulated four fundamental freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Past laureates include Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, the Dalai Lama and Angela Merkel.

As reported by ThePublic, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin on 14 April, where he held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The parties discussed military and financial support and signed a number of agreements.
