The night-time attack on Kyiv served as yet another reminder of the reality with which Ukraine has been living for several years now. Whilst the capital was enduring yet another massive strike, the attention of much of the world was focused on other events.
The events of last night clearly underscore a fact that has long been known: our pain is ours alone. Whilst the Assumption Cathedral of the Lavra was burning in Kyiv, a show featuring fighters in cages was being staged on the White House lawn. Just in time for Trump’s birthday. And today, as Ostap Yarysh writes, the American press will be savouring the details of the fight, rather than yet another raid on Kyiv. And that is entirely logical.

We must finally tell ourselves the truth: empathy for Ukraine, which has been attacked, ran out somewhere around the first half of 2022. Since then, most of the state’s decisions regarding Ukraine have been made solely from the standpoint of self-interest, rather than a sense of justice. Because that is the nature of this world – cynical and unjust.

The world respects the strong. So no matter how many tears we shed for the victims, it won’t make Trump view the situation any differently than through the prism of self-interest. Not just in terms of image (such as the Nobel Prize), but also in a thoroughly pragmatic sense. Which still boils down to the intention to profit from Russia.
What can we do? Here, there is practically only one option – to become stronger. And to ruthlessly cut out everything within the country that prevents us from becoming so.
