A complaint regarding the possible illegal import of goods via cargo companies, submitted last autumn to law enforcement, customs and tax authorities, has not yielded any visible results – Getmantsev
Last October, I contacted the law enforcement, customs and tax authorities regarding the illegal import of goods via so-called cargo companies.
These are organisations that, for a small fee per kilogram of goods, will import anything that moves or stands still without customs inspection. What sets this type of smuggler apart is the open nature of their crime. They constantly advertise their services.
The scheme is systemic in nature and involves all the ‘respectable’ officials and law enforcement officers in the relevant region. In our case, primarily in Odesa.
I went on Google, searched – everything’s in place, the ‘business’ is thriving – there are no results from the relevant authorities.
Instead, there is information from the BEB regarding ‘operations’. Indeed, what else could the information from Odessa’s Muntean be, whose ‘merits’ the new, honest head of the BEB recently recognised with yet another promotion?
The situation with customs is even more telling. It still cannot identify all carriers, even though every item of goods is labelled with the specific cargo company’s markings.
This is the true picture of the authorities’ effectiveness: presentations and slides show ‘frenetic activity’, but in practice it looks more and more like a sham rather than systematic and concrete measures.
The system works: the authorities make a profit, and the smugglers get their goods tax-free.
