Oleksiy Sukhachov was born in 1978 in Kharkiv. He obtained a higher legal education at the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law Academy. He devoted almost two decades to serving in state security and justice agencies. His career began at the Security Service of Ukraine, where he dealt with issues of combating corruption and organised crime.

His arrival at the SBI in 2020 as deputy director coincided with the Bureau's institutional formation. After winning an open competition at the end of 2021, he officially became the head of the agency.
