14 May 2026: a church holiday, traditions and superstitions
On Thursday, 14 May 2026, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Isidore the Martyr.
Isidore lived in the 3rd century on the island of Chios. According to church tradition, he was a soldier during the persecution of Christians under the reign of Emperor Decius.
The saint openly declared himself a Christian and refused to worship the pagan gods.
Despite torture, Isidore did not renounce his faith. For this, he was executed.
After his death, Christians buried the martyr with honour. Subsequently, Isidore began to be venerated as a saint in both the Eastern and Western Churches.
The Ascension of the Lord among Western Christians
On 14 May 2026, Catholics and Protestants will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.
This is one of the major church holidays, which falls on the fortieth day after Easter each year.
The feast is dedicated to the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
Prayer to Saint Isidore
On the feast day of Saint Isidore, the faithful turn to him in prayer for intercession, the strengthening of faith, and help in life’s trials.
“O Saint Isidore, valiant martyr of Christ, you who, through faith and devotion, endured trials whilst facing the enemies of Christ’s Church, we ask you to be our intercessor and helper.
Almighty God, graciously accept our prayers and the intercession of Saint Isidore before You, he who is endowed with Your grace and mercy. Saint Isidore, pray for us and our needs to God; help us to faithfully follow the example of your faith, so that we may always remain steadfast in the Christian faith.
O Saint Isidore, our patron, we ask you to pray for us before the throne of God, that we may receive grace and an answer to our prayers.
Amen.”
