19 May is Family Doctor Day in Ukraine, whilst Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint John of Gotf. Traditionally, this day has been associated with rain, good health, planting cucumbers and various folk taboos.

According to the modern church calendar, on 19 May Orthodox Ukrainians honour Saint John of Gotf. He founded a monastery in Crimea. It is believed that prayers to the saint help the faithful to find healing from serious chronic illnesses.

According to the old style, on this day followers of the Julian calendar commemorate Hegumen Ion of Pochaiv. They ask him for a bountiful pea harvest and protection of the family from ill-wishers.

In Ukraine, 19 May is also celebrated as Family Doctor Day.

This is a professional holiday for medical practitioners who are the first to learn of patients’ health problems. Family doctors must take an individual approach to treatment, taking into account a person’s previous complaints and their family history.

Around the world, 19 May is celebrated as Dinosaur Day.

This holiday brings together people interested in prehistoric creatures, as well as scientists and archaeologists. You can spend the day at a palaeontological museum or watching a science programme.

Other international events on this day include World Hepatitis Day, Notebook Day, Gut Health Awareness Day, June Sun Day and Rubik’s Cube Day.

In folk tradition, 19 May was often associated with rain. Peasants welcomed the rainfall, as it moistened the earth and watered the plants. Getting wet in the rain was considered a lucky omen – according to belief, it could bring good health.

Among the weather omens for this day, several key ones are mentioned. Heavy dew on the grass foretells a good cucumber harvest. If dandelions close up in the middle of the day, rain is on the way. Morning mist promises warmer weather.

On the folk holiday of 19 May in Ukraine, it was customary to sow cucumbers and gather medicinal herbs. This day was also considered auspicious for handicrafts.

At the same time, ancient beliefs advised against lending salt or bread to anyone, lest one give away one’s own happiness along with them. One should also avoid being lazy, breaking promises, or getting a haircut – according to tradition, a new hairstyle may bring disappointment.
