In June, sales of electric cars in the EU overtook those of petrol cars for the first time
According to ACEA, in June 2026 the EU market for new passenger cars grew by 13.6 per cent year-on-year, reaching 1,147,962 units.

The electric vehicle segment once again recorded the largest increase – 60.7 per cent.
New car registrations in the European Union, by power source, were distributed as follows:
- hybrids (HEV) – 404,608 units (+18.4%);
- electric vehicles (BEV) – 270,557 units (+60.7%);
- petrol cars – 244,833 units (-12.4%);
- plug-in hybrids – 115,714 units (+22.1%);
- diesel cars – 76,778 units (-16.1%);
- others – 35,472 units (+2.7%).
In total, nearly 5.9 million new passenger cars were registered in the EU in the first half of 2026, which is 5.7 per cent more than in the same period last year.
