The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
Saints Peter and Paul are regarded as two of the most important figures in Christianity. It was they who made a significant contribution to the spread of the Christian faith and suffered martyrdom for preaching the Gospel.
On this feast day, the faithful attend church services and pray for health, peace, prosperity, and success in their work and studies.
The Apostle Peter is regarded as the patron saint of fishermen, sailors and all those whose work is connected with water. People turn to the Apostle Paul with prayers for wisdom, help with their studies and support in difficult life situations.
Why the Kasperivska Icon is commemorated on this day
29 June is also a day of veneration for the Kasperivska Icon of the Mother of God — one of the most revered Orthodox relics in southern Ukraine.
According to church tradition, the icon was brought to Ukraine at the end of the 16th century. Following numerous accounts of healings, it came to be regarded as miraculous. During the Crimean War, people prayed before the icon for the protection of Odesa, and today the relic is kept in the city’s Cathedral of the Dormition.
What not to do on 29 June
According to folk traditions, on this day it is not recommended to:
— to quarrel, swear or wish ill upon others;
— to engage in heavy physical labour, repairs or a thorough clean;
— to lend or borrow money;
— to make large purchases;
— sewing, knitting or doing other handicrafts;
— getting married;
— drinking excessively;
— swimming in bodies of water.

Hot weather portends a frosty Christmas.
If the cuckoo has stopped calling before St Peter’s Day, winter will come early.
Rain on St Peter’s and St Paul’s Day is considered a sign of a cool summer and a snowy winter.
