29 April 2026: a church holiday, folk traditions and International Dance Day

On 29 April according to the New Julian calendar, which the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has adopted, the faithful commemorate the Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus.

The Nine Martyrs of Cyzicus lived in the 3rd century and preached Christianity in the city of Cyzicus in Asia Minor.

According to tradition, they openly professed the Christian faith, called on people to renounce paganism, and were persecuted as a result.

The saints accepted a martyr’s death for their convictions, but did not renounce their faith.

In folk tradition, this day is associated with prayers for healing. Believers turn to the nine martyrs with requests for deliverance from physical ailments, epidemics, mental distress and life’s troubles.

On 29 April, people also pray for the strengthening of faith, the health of loved ones and the protection of the family.

The main international event on this day is International Dance Day.

The holiday was established by UNESCO in honour of the birthday of the French ballet master Jean-Georges Noverre, who is known as the father of modern ballet.

The aim of International Dance Day is to unite people of different cultures through body language, music, rhythm and the performing arts.

This date serves as a reminder of the importance of dance as a form of self-expression, part of cultural heritage and a means of communication between people of different nations.

In many countries, concerts, open classes, festivals, dance performances and masterclasses are held on 29 April.

World Immunology Day is also observed worldwide on this day.

This date is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of the immune system for human health.

World Immunology Day draws attention to disease prevention, vaccination, research in the field of immunology, and the role of immunity in protecting the body.

Another date on 29 April is the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Chemical Weapons.

It is dedicated to honouring those who have died as a result of the use of chemical weapons.

This day also serves as a reminder of the need to comply with international bans aimed at the non-proliferation and elimination of such weapons.

Folk traditions on 29 April are linked to the weather, the coming harvest and field work.

Strong winds on this day portend frequent rain in summer.

If there are many stars in the sky, the coming year may be a good one for grain.

The flowering of alder trees was considered a sign that it was time to sow buckwheat.

Clear and warm weather on 29 April promises a fine summer and early ripening of fruit.

Rain on this day was considered a good omen for the coming harvest.

If the day is warm and the evening cool, stable spring weather was expected.

The active singing of birds from early morning was seen as a sign of warming weather and sunny days.

According to folk beliefs, one should not feel envy or quarrel on 29 April.

It was believed that negative emotions on this day could come back to a person twofold.

It was also advised not to engage in heavy work in the garden.

The day was considered more favourable for spiritual cleansing, prayer, peaceful activities or planning future work.

One must not refuse to help if someone asks for assistance.

It was also advised to avoid noisy entertainment involving excessive alcohol consumption.

It is not advisable to use foul language or wish ill upon anyone. People believed that unkind words on this day held special power.

It was not worth starting conflicts over money or domestic matters.

29 April was considered a day more suited to reconciliation, peaceful conversation and good deeds.

Name days on 29 April are celebrated by Artem, Vasyl, Feodosiy, Bohdan, Anton and Ivan.

Those celebrating their name day on this day are wished good health, peace of mind, prosperity, protection from illness and life’s troubles.

It is also customary to wish for the support of a heavenly patron, family warmth and peace.
