This was reported by Vatican News.
Spain welcomed Pope Leo XIV
On Saturday, 6 June, the plane carrying Pope Leo XIV landed at Madrid International Airport. The head of the Catholic Church was met by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, as well as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The official ceremony at the airport included military honours and the presentation of delegations. After a brief private meeting, the parties proceeded to the Royal Palace. An official welcome is scheduled there, along with a meeting with representatives of the authorities, the diplomatic corps and the public.
What is planned during the visit
During his six-day trip, the Pope will visit Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands. In Barcelona, he will take part in the opening of the new highest tower of the Sagrada Família basilica. The event has been timed to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí. The visit to the Canary Islands will be dedicated, in particular, to the themes of migration and the protection of human dignity. The Pope’s previous visit to Madrid took place in 2011, when Benedict XVI travelled to Spain for World Youth Day.
