30 June 2026 — what church feast day is it: who do the faithful honour and what should not be done?
On this day, Orthodox Christians commemorate the Twelve Apostles — the closest disciples of Jesus Christ,
On 30 June according to the New Julian calendar, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the Synaxis of the Glorious and All-Praised Twelve Apostles — the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. In popular tradition, this day is known as ‘Makovka of Summer’ and is associated with a number of traditions, omens and taboos.

On this day, Orthodox Christians commemorate the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles — the closest disciples of Jesus Christ, who spread the Christian faith to various countries around the world following His Resurrection.

The Church commemorates the apostles Peter, Andrew the First-Called, John the Theologian, James the son of Zebedee, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Judas the son of James, Simon the Zealot and Matthias, who took the place of Judas Iscariot after his betrayal.

The feast has been observed since the 4th century. According to Church tradition, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the apostles received the gift of speaking in different languages so that they might bring the Gospel to the nations of the world. Almost all of them died a martyr’s death for their faith. The exception is considered to be the Apostle John the Theologian, who, according to tradition, died a natural death.

One of the churches dedicated to the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles is the Church of the Holy Trinity at the Kytaiv Monastery in Kyiv.

What feast day is it according to the Old Style calendar?

According to the Julian calendar, 30 June is the feast day of the martyrs Manuel, Savel and Ismail of Persia.

What do people pray to the Twelve Apostles for?

On the Feast of the Twelve Apostles, the faithful turn to the saints with prayers for health, peace in the family, prosperity, help in difficult life circumstances and protection from misfortune.

Traditionally, on this day, people visit a church or pray at home. It is also considered a good deed to make peace with those with whom there have been conflicts, to ask for forgiveness, to help the needy and to give alms.

What not to do on 30 June

The Church does not impose any specific everyday restrictions on this day, but urges people to refrain from quarrelling, insults, envy, slander, judgement, laziness and refusing to help those in need.

Folk tradition also has its own superstitions. It is believed that on this day one should not:

  • cut your hair or nails;
  • engage in heavy physical labour;
  • do a thorough clean;
  • work in the garden or vegetable patch;
  • drink alcohol to excess.

At the same time, these prohibitions are folk beliefs and do not form part of official church doctrine.

Folk traditions of the feast

Among the people, the Feast of the Twelve Apostles was known as the ‘Second Easter’.

Our ancestors used to dye 13 eggs: twelve symbolised the apostles, and the thirteenth symbolised Jesus Christ. Unlike at Easter, the eggs were usually dyed yellow, a colour symbolising the sun, prosperity and a bountiful harvest.

They were exchanged with family and neighbours, and festive dishes were prepared using the eggs.

Another folk name for this day is ‘The Peak of Summer’. It was believed that the hottest period of summer began after 30 June.

Folk omens for 30 June

According to folk omens, people would observe nature on this day to predict the weather.

If the cuckoo continued to call after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, summer would be long and the snow would fall late.

If the cuckoo fell silent, people expected an early and snowy winter.

If carp hide at the bottom of a body of water, bad weather is on the way.

If ducks are swimming calmly on the water, no rain is expected in the coming days.

If cats seek shade, there will be intense heat.

Heavy morning dew foretells a clear day, whilst its absence signals rainy weather.

Who is celebrating their name day

On 30 June, according to the new church calendar, Andriy, Ivan and Petro celebrate their name days.
