China has called on Ukraine and Russia to resume peace talks as soon as possible

China has called on Russia and Ukraine to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible in order to bring the war to an end.

Sun Lei, Deputy Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the UN, made the statement during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

According to the diplomat, Beijing insists on an immediate cessation of hostilities and the resumption of negotiations. He also called on the parties to demonstrate the political will to seek a peaceful settlement in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter.

Sun Lei emphasised that the war is increasingly affecting the civilian population, causing suffering among civilians.

The latest round of talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the US took place on 17 February in Geneva. Subsequently, the Russian side stated that the negotiation process had been suspended against the backdrop of the escalating situation surrounding Iran.
